Are biometrics the future for mobile security?

Hester Gras

Could you imagine using your DNA for authentication on your mobile device? Think twice, because biometric authentication will be the future of mobile security. In fact, it is already being used; software can recognize our voice or face. The popularity of mobile biometrics is increasing so fast that it’s only a matter of time that we are going to see applications with it more often in our daily life.

How does biometrics technology work?

Devices use physical or physiological data such as fingerprints, face, eye and in the future DNA to authenticate a person’s identity. This data is stored in a database or locally on the device. When you want to get access to a biometrics protected device or app, you have to scan your finger, face or eye with a camera or sensor. The underlying software compares the scan with the stored data. When the software verifies your identity, you will get access.

Biometrics in your daily life

Biometrics are already used on Apple’s iPhone and iPad with Touch ID. You can use Touch ID to get access to your device or certain apps.

For your enterprise a fingerprint authentication can be useful as well. For example, to improve security of enterprise-owned mobile devices. A fingerprint is unique, passwords and numeric PINs aren’t.

It’s all very cool but biometrics has got some weak spots. When scanners get smudged or scratched it can’t recognize the data. So the technology has to mature before it will conquer the world.
