3 questions about Employee Engagement to Nathalie Soeteman [INTERVIEW]

Hester Gras

Next week, Wednesday 23 November, we are hosting an executive Round Table on Employee Engagement. This event will be all about increasing employee engagement from an internal communications perspective. In preparation of the event we asked our chairwoman of the day, communication and engagement expert Nathalie Soeteman, 3 questions to introduce the topic.

Why should the topic ‘Employee Engagement’ on the agenda of an internal communications manager?

Deloitte’s Analysis on Global Human Capital Trends 2016 shows that 81% of global executives and board members feel they should pay a lot more attention to employee engagement. In fact the topic ranks fourth in the top 10 of important challenges. Third place goes to culture design. And we all know these two topics walk hand in hand and have a major influence on all business results. So, reason one to have Employee Engagement on the agenda is making a significant contribution to fulfilling the boards’ wishes and contribute to the organizations long term strategy.

To what extend is internal communication related to Employee Engagement?

Well, I don’t want to exaggerate but, I do believe that it’s all about internal communications when you want to increase Employee Engagement. Of course, HR and Marketing should be aligned during the process. Through internal communication channels, both online and offline, one can change knowledge, skills and eventually behavior by involving people, letting culture champions shine and facilitating them in their success.

Where to start with Employee Engagement?

I think the first step should be examining the current level of engagement in your organization. Don’t just hold a survey. But, start with tracing employees who already are big fans of the brand. Talk to employees throughout all departments of the organization. And create a movement where they can meet and reinforce each other.
